Don Bosco Child Protection Centre

Ghana \ Ashaiman

Don Bosco Child Protection Centre is a a care and education establishment which was open in March 2014. It is a place which is to deal with the most serious issues in West Africa. The centre's door is open to children and teenagers who fell victims of child trafficking, labour exploitation or prostitution. Salesians working in Ghana initiated cooperation with the police forces, particularly with the human trafficking department which had no resources or places to help the victims after arrests were made and they were liberated from their captors. Don Bosco Child Protection Centre is to host 150 children who will stay there for a period of up to one year after which they will be reunited with their families or placed in foster families or they will be sent to child care homes for street children in Sunyani run by Salesians.

There are over 90 million street children in the world and in Ghana itself nearly 30 per cent of children aged 5 to 14 work and live on the street. The work is usually much more demanding than what is physically possible and the children are often abused physically and emotionally without any form of protection from the government or parents, who for various reasons do not take care of their children. The centre is the answer to the immediate need of protecting the youth from depravity by attempting to reintroduce them into the life within the society.
