Equipment for the Youth Centre in Sunyani

Africa/Brong Ahafo/Sunyani

Brong – Ahafo region lies in Central Ghana. The population inhabiting the region is predominantly employed in farming and young people, even the educated ones, face employment problems which often mean they are unable to secure a job to provide for the basic needs. Apart from financial instability, family relations are also endangered (sometimes because of cultural and custom characteristics of the tribes). It is therefore necessary to provide some stability through education and religious formation which is currently out of balance due to the abundance of different churches and denominations. Children and young people are looking for standards and models where the ‘offer’ is more attractive. On top of all that, there is the bad influence of the modern media which often attracts the youth to pornography, addictions or internet fraud. Setting an example on how to use free time wisely is becoming an increasingly difficult challenge these days.

Sunyani is the capital city of one of the richest regions in Central Ghana. There are nearly 100,000 inhabitants in and around the city. Salesians and novices run Youth Centres and oratories in Sunyani and the surrounding villages where young people can meet, learn, play and pray. It is these kind of places where around 2,500 young people learn what real childhood is and also how to be an adult. Each of the centres is run in accordance with the words of father Bosko – the founder of Salesian Community – to educate into good Christians and citizens. The starting point is usually sporting events, particularly football and then music and dancing, which is in every Ghanian’s souls. Such gatherings are held every Saturday and Sunday but there is a serious defficiency of equipment, games, football tables, portable speakers, generally object that help attract the young people to come and take part. The gatherings take place in nine locations: Sereso, Adantia, Kwatire and in the parishes of Sunyani and Odumase. The project aims to purchase footballs, nets, volleyballs, table tennis equioment, football tables, board games, portable speakers and first aid kits as well as transportation costs for each of the oratories.
